Why is there no single price for SEO?
Two Sheffield firms can ask the same question and receive answers a factor of five apart. The reason is scope. SEO is not one product.
It is a bundle of technical repair, content production and local signal work. The mix depends entirely on what is already there.
A ten-page site for a two-person tooling shop in Attercliffe needs a different quantity of work from a two-hundred-page site for a multi-site fabricator. Both jobs get called SEO. Only one of them is a month of writing.
The second variable is the starting condition. A site built years ago on an abandoned content management system costs more to fix than a clean modern build. The first month goes on repair rather than on progress.
The third variable is how much of the content only you know. A machining capability page needs facts that live in your head and in your quality manual.
That is subject-matter time from your side. It is the part no agency can shortcut.
Which pricing models are actually in use?
Four shapes cover almost everything a Sheffield firm will be offered.
FIXED-FEE PROJECT
One agreed scope for one agreed price. It is the honest option for a first engagement. Both sides know exactly what is being bought.
MONTHLY RETAINER
A recurring fee for continuing work. It suits a site that needs steady content and monitoring rather than one repair job.
HOURLY
Time billed as it is used. It is clean for advisory work and awkward for delivery. Nobody can size the total in advance.
PERFORMANCE SHARE
A fee tied to rankings or revenue. It reads well and it is not used here. The supplier then has a reason to chase easy terms rather than useful ones.
※1 Scope note: a quote given before anybody has opened your site is a guess wearing a number.
